In my previous blog, “Bridging the Gap” I talked about bringing people together as a community through fun events held at the YMCA. Yesterday, Saturday Feb 1st, was Ukuwa/YMCA’s second time doing something like this and it turned out better than expected. Ukuwa is a humanitarian organization which supports impoverished children in Africa and America. To raise the bar and promote a strong sense of understanding the world around them, we decided to partner up with the YMCA. So by 8:00, their whole basketball gym became completely filled with kids, all sorts of ethnic/diverse groups from different backgrounds. Some played dodge ball, some had a dance party, while others simply sat and enjoyed the fun. There are a few kids at Kitamu who don’t really participate much, but even they started making an effort to hang with everybody because of the atmosphere. Something about that night was magical, each person took part in an activity and no-one felt left out. This would never have been possible without these wonderful people: Malik, Nelson and Kaylie-the leaders.
