Clean Water

Clean Water

Today, more than ever, the world is full of people who are coming together to make a difference. My name is Rachel Kelley and I joined UKUWA because I believe every individual deserves pure water; water that does not contain bacteria and other unhealthy substances. Working together with other UKUWA members to lend a hand to people in places like Africa is just a start. Someday we hope to lend a hand all over the world.

Every day, people waste thousands of gallons of water without hesitation. It has become a daily routine. In Africa, people are digging holes, hoping to find water that will save their families from dehydration. I could not even imagine what it would be like to not have easy access to water. Those of us who are privileged and never carry that burden need to unite and make a difference.

I am sure a part of you feels remorse and wishes things could be different. You might even be thinking you are too young, or could never change anything. Maybe you believe that if you do not get involved, someone else will. I recommend that you stop wishing or thinking that someone else is going to do it for you. Join the fight for pure water. I can do it and so can you. Together, as Ukuwans, we can all make a difference.

Why I CARE

Posted by Omar Saqr in Untagged

Omar Saqr

Every day, children in developing countries have insufficient access to clean and drinkable water. This devastating problem is the second largest worldwide killer of children under the age of 5.

Additionally, an AIDS epidemic runs rampant and unchecked, impairing a child’s chances for a healthy and dignified life. Yet another tragedy is the fact that hundreds of children lack a proper education. Simply, the reality of what I saw in northern Africa helped me become a part of UKUWA; an organization dedicated to helping innocent children.

So why do I care?

Because although the challenges we face are big, our dreams are bigger.

Because if a single person is helped it will be enough. Because as I sit writing this article a child somewhere far across this earth is hidden away, matted with dirt, overwhelmed with fear, alone, hungry, diseased, and no one cares. Because I know one day I will be standing next to that child extending a hand he or she might never otherwise receive.

Because if nothing is done now, poverty will never become history.

Because every 5 seconds a lonely child dies of hunger.

Because in the minute or so it takes to read this article 12 forgotten children will have already died.

I care.

Why I am an UKUWAN.

John McConnell

One decade into the second half of the last century, there was enough food in the world to provide every person with 2300 calories per day. Unfortunately, those calories were distributed unevenly.

It is estimated that more than half of the people in developing countries suffered from chronic undernutrition.

In other words, those who survived were rarely considered healthy.

By the mid-1990’s, the population of the world had more than doubled.

Fortunately, agricultural production moved even faster. Global food supplies reached 2700 calories per person each day. Moreover, the percentage of chronically undernourished people in the developing world had been reduced to 20%.

UKUWA is dedicated to further reducing that 20%. Our student leaders are currently working to improve living conditions in rural parts of Kenya, a country that has shown little improvement over the past several decades.

To me, our task is noble and exciting.

This is why I am a part of UKUWA.

I encourage all of you to help us help the world.

HUNGER

Posted by John McConnell in Untagged

John McConnell

In fact, 17% more calories per person are produced per person than 30 years ago, DESPITE a population increase of 70%.

The problem:

Many people do not have sufficient land to grow, or income to purchase, enough food.

In very basic terms:

Poverty causes hunger.

Additionally:

Hunger causes poverty.

UKUWA's student leaders in the US and UK are currently working to break this devastating cycle in Kenya.

You are cordially invited to join us.

Why I Created UKUWA

Posted by Mahmood in Untagged

Mahmood
For several weeks, I hung out on white sand beaches during the day and experienced big city nightlife in the evening. Palm trees and beautiful architecture were everywhere. Everything was beautiful, clean and new. When I got tired of going to the beach, I spent afternoons in museums. I also went on safaris to areas stocked with lions and zebras and other wild game.

One day, someone suggested a trip to more rural areas. I quickly agreed, expecting the fun to continue.

What I saw shocked me.

Everyone is familiar with televised images of starving children in Africa. Believe me when I tell you that seeing starvation and hopeless poverty firsthand is nothing like viewing the heartbreaking situation from the comfort of your living room.

For example, shortly after my arrival, I saw two women digging water out of the ground with rudimentary tools. A small child, no older than three, was assisting them. They had been digging for a month. The water coming to the surface was the color of lemon juice. When I asked, the women told me that it would take nearly a year of digging to meet the needs of the tiny village.

I was completely unprepared for the poverty I found in rural Kenya. I felt terrible because I had nothing to give those people that would ease their suffering or help meet their most basic needs. There was nothing I could do but try to make the children happy. I sang and danced and played with them. When it was time for me to leave, the village kids chased after our car, smiling and waving goodbye.

I had to do something.

When I returned home, I met with my youth team. I explained to them what I saw in Kenya and asked if they were interested in helping me. Even though I told my small group that the challenges were great, their positive response was amazing. The youth team’s decision to take up the cause motivated me more than they realized at the time.

But I knew that we could not do it alone, so I searched for passionate, motivated people to help turn my once local dream into a global reality. Once again, the response was amazing. Within weeks, UKUWA was officially born.

Before long, UKUWA’s Facebook membership reached 1000 members. Our excitement increased with each step our small group took toward changing the lives of people who went through life believing that hope did not exist.

Today, we are working in local high schools and universities around the world, and UKUWA representatives are acting on the group’s behalf in Kenya.

So, back to my friend’s question. Why did I create UKUWA?

The answer is simple.

I created UKUWA to make a difference.

UKUWA!
